Regulating
The ERA is committed to protecting the rights of electricity consumers in the Cayman Islands through a comprehensive regulatory framework. In accordance with the Electricity Regulatory Authority Law (2010 Revision), the ERA performs the following regulatory functions:
- Grants, renews, modifies, suspends or revokes licences for generation and transmission and distribution of electricity
- Promotes sustainable competition in the electricity industry in the Cayman Islands by prohibiting anticompetitive agreements, arrangements and practices relating to generation, transmission and distribution of electricity
- Issues fines to licensees for failing to comply with the ERA Law or any terms, conditions or requirements of the licensees’ generation or transmission and distribution licences
- Promotes reliable and efficient service from each licensee via performance standards
- Promotes the use of renewable energy
- Conducts a competitive solicitation process for additional generating capacity
